Where Real 8K Content Comes From in 2026

True 8K broadcasting is still rare worldwide. Japan's public broadcaster NHK runs the best-known 8K channel, delivered by satellite inside Japan since late 2018. A few sporting events and concerts have been filmed in 8K as trials. Those trials proved the technology works, but they also showed how costly 8K production still is. Feature films are a different story. Most are finished at 4K, even when shot on higher-resolution cameras. An 8K version of a film usually means an upscale, not extra detail.

HEVC and AV1: Why the Codec Matters as Much as the Pixels

A codec is the method used to shrink video so it can travel over the internet. Without a modern codec, 4K and 8K streams would be far too large for home broadband. The codec decides how much picture you get from each megabit.

HEVC, also called H.265

Codec support is usually listed under "video formats" or "decoding" in a device's technical specs. Look for HEVC Main 10 for 4K HDR, and for 8K resolution next to HEVC or AV1 if you want native 8K. If the page only mentions H.264, the device is not a good fit for UHD streaming.

Is 8K Worth It for IPTV?

For most homes in 2026, 8K is not yet worth buying new hardware for. There is too little native 8K content, and 4K with HDR already delivers most of the visible gain. If you already own an 8K TV and a fast line, though, it costs nothing extra to enjoy 8K where it exists.
